Lewis Hamilton paid tribute to Anthoine Hubert after the French driver was killed in a crash during Formula 2's feature race in Belgium.

Hubert was competing in F2's first race of the weekend shortly after Hamilton had secured third place on the grid for the Belgian Grand Prix; indeed the F1 world champion was discussing his efforts with the media when he saw the incident as it was aired live on television.

Arden driver Hubert succumbed to his injuries after a high-speed collision through Raidillon with Juan Manuel Correa, who is in a stable condition in hospital.

Hamilton labelled the Frenchman a "hero" and reminded fans of the dangers that their racing heroes willingly enter in every event.

"If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe your [sic] hugely mistaken," Hamilton posted to Instagram.

"All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it is not appreciated enough. Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport.

"Anthoine is a hero as far as I'm concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams. I'm so sad that this has happened. Let's lift him up and remember him. Rest in peace brother."
