Why Mercedes hope for bad weather in Silverstone
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff hopes some good old-fashioned British weather can help get the Silver Arrows back on track at Silverstone this week after their first major setback of 2019 in Austria last time out.
Having won the first eight races of the season, Mercedes finished third and fifth in Spielberg, having struggled to contend with the searing heat in the Styrian mountains.
Mercedes have confirmed that the issues which hamstrung them at the Red Bull Ring will likely resurface at any race in which the mercury skyrockets again.
As such, Wolff would be happy to see cloudier skies and typically dour Silverstone weather this weekend as Mercedes look to bounce back at the British Grand Prix.
"I'm really hoping for the typical English weather at Silverstone so we can gain a little bit of time to sort our problems out," Wolff said.
"There is no alternative than to fix our problems for the coming hot races, Hockenheim and Budapest. There is no other option."
Although trusting the weather may not be the most effective strategy, Wolff is also confident that Silverstone's characteristics will also aid Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
"The power deployment maybe isn't as much of a differentiator through the fast corners so I think Silverstone should be much more to our liking," he added.
"Maybe not as much as Paul Ricard, but much better than Austria."
