Barcelona testing: Red Bull engine fails as Kubica remains fastest
At Williams last year, Robert Kubica wasn’t used to posting fast lap times, but is enjoying better luck as Alfa Romeo’s test driver as he retained his fastest time from the morning session into the afternoon.
The Pole went behind the wheel in the morning session before GP drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi got their chance in the afternoon, with his 1:16.942 effort being enough to place him top of the rankings.
Max Verstappen went closest to Kubica with a time of 1:17.347, but his and Red Bull’s day would take a turn for the worse in the last few minutes of the session as his car’s power appeared to cut out which led to a red flag. At that time, Alpha Tauri’s Daniil Kvyat look to suffer from a fuel cut.
Eighteen out of the 20 drivers who will compete on the grid in 2020 took part in the day’s testing, with Sergio Perez, Kvyat and Pierre Gasly making up the top five behind Verstappen and Kubica.

Hamilton once again had a shot of Mercedes’ new DAS system, but finished in seventh.
Romain Grosjean was the only driver to continue the full afternoon, and as such completed the most amount of laps with 107, with Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes in behind with 90, while Hamilton had 89.
Williams have some work to do and put screens up in their garage after a power unit issue for Nicholas Latifi put him out after 48 laps.
Down at the other end of the standings, Kimi Raikkonen and Esteban Ocon set the slowest times.
