However, ahead of the session, the weather intervened, with lightning first putting the session on hold before NASCAR officially confirmed 45 minutes later that Friday's running had been canceled for good.

The Cup Series drivers will now head into Saturday's qualifying session with no practice time on the track, unless NASCAR decides to change the schedule ahead of tomorrow.

UPDATE: NASCAR has confirmed that a combined 25-minute practice session will take place on Saturday at 2pm ET right before qualifying at 2:40 pm ET.

NASCAR weather forecast for Indianapolis

Unfortunately, it looks as though there could be yet be further action disrupted by rain this weekend, with the forecast for Saturday and Sunday not looking bright.

At the time of Cup Series qualifying on Saturday, for example, there is a 40% chance of rain at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

This threat persists between 35-40% into the early evening, and from 5pm, the chances of rain increase to 64%, with thunderstorms also predicted in the area at that time.

Xfinity Series race action is scheduled to get underway at 4:30 pm ET, so it could be affected.

Unfortunately, the threat of thunderstorms and rain persists on Sunday, when the Cup Series race is set to get underway at 2pm ET.

However, in the build-up to that, there is a decent chance of rain throughout the day, with the chance of precipitation standing at 51% around the time of the race start.

This threat persists over the next few hours, although it does gradually drop down to 32% by 6pm ET.

With plenty of possible rain to come, it could be a long weekend at the Brickyard.
