NASCAR has announced punishments for three teams ahead of this weekend's action at Dover Motor Speedway.

All three penalties relate to last weekend's events at Sonoma Raceway, however, with both the Cup and Xfinity Series having raced at the California track.

It was a good weekend to be in a car numbered '88' at Sonoma, with Trackhouse Racing star Shane van Gisbergen winning Sunday's Toyota/SaveMart 350 in the No. 88, whilst in the Xfinity Series, Connor Zilisch did the same, ironically, fending off van Gisbergen, who in that race, was in the No. 9 for JR Motorsports.

The three punishments above relate to the latter race, with three Xfinity Series teams found guilty of the same offence following post-race inspections at the track on Sunday.

Three NASCAR teams fined after Sonoma

Post-race at Sonoma, NASCAR confirmed that those inspections had been concluded without issue.

However, it was also revealed that the Nos. 21, 26, and 44 had each been found to have one lug nut unsecured when undergoing their checks.

These cars were driven by Austin Hill, Dean Thompson and Brennan Poole for Richard Childress Racing, Sam Hunt Racing and Alpha Prime Racing, respectively, with all three teams no doubt anticipating a penalty following the discovery of their loose nuts.

Loose lug nuts discovered in tech are a slam dunk penalty, and that has proven the case once again, with all three teams hit with a $5,000 fine under Sections 8.8.10.4a: Tires and Wheels of the NASCAR rule book.

Elsewhere, there was only one other penalty from the Sonoma report, which revealed a double punishment for a Cup Series team, the impact of which is set to be felt at upcoming races.
