NASCAR star Kyle Larson issues verdict on Cup Series GOAT

NASCAR Cup Series star Kyle Larson knows a thing or two about driving a racecar.

The Hendrick Motorsports star won the Cup Series championship back in 2021, and so far has 32 race victories in the series, a number that will undoubtedly increase in the coming years.

On top of that, away from NASCAR, Larson often excels in sprint cars and midgets, leading many to believe he is the best all-around driver in the world. Larson himself has even claimed that he is a better all-round driver than F1 champion Max Verstappen.

Whilst he certainly has a claim to that moniker, the Hendrick Motorsports star has a very long way to go before he can be considered the greatest of all time (GOAT) in the Cup Series.

And, in a recent podcast appearance, Larson was quizzed on who he thinks is NASCAR's GOAT.

"I think the greatest of all time would be Jimmie Johnson," Larson explained on the Field Day podcast.

The 2021 champion continued, explaining his thoughts behind the pick: "Seven-time champion in the modern era of NASCAR, I think it just gets tougher and tougher to win races and win championships with formats and cars getting better and closer and drivers getting better.

"So for what he did, went in five in a row and then another two in the modern era, was incredible."

It's certainly hard to argue with Larson, with Johnson having had a fine career in the Cup Series spanning 22 years.

During that time, as Larson explained, Johnson won seven championships, a joint record he holds alongside Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty and that looks unlikely to be broken any time soon, if ever.

Joey Logano is the closest active driver, for example, but he has just three championships.

Johnson is also tied sixth on the NASCAR Cup Series all-time wins list with 83 victories.
