Rain made an unexpected appearance at the Austrian Grand Prix on Friday, with a number of drivers and teams reporting drops around the track, although not enough to send them scurrying in for intermediate or wet tyres.

However, the tricky circuit didn't prove too much for championship leaders McLaren to handle as the day carried on, with Lando Norris and championship leader Oscar Piastri setting the fastest and second fastest times respectively in FP2.

The Red Bull Ring produced heaps of support for reigning champion Max Verstappen, but the Dutchman only finished third-fastest during his second practice session in front of the Orange Army this weekend.

Aston Martin star Lance Stroll made a rare appearance in the top five with a P4 finish in FP2, with Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc finishing one place behind Stroll, only fifth-fastest.

Hamilton's nightmarish weekend continued in Friday's second practice after a worrying moment where he failed to see the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli on track, leading to an investigation into the Ferrari star.

Elsewhere on the grid saw a debut for F2 star Alex Dunne, who impressed when stepping in to Norris' McLaren, marking the first appearance for an Irishman during an F1 race weekend in 22 years.

The last thing the Ferrari needs at this stage of the season is to destroy their chances of putting in valuable track time, whether that be for Leclerc, Hamilton, or any rookies they field in the car. As the pressure mounts on Fred Vasseur and his driver duo, they need to recover from this poor start and produce a strong weekend.
