NASCAR has confirmed that Joe Gibbs Racing are set to be hit with a penalty following a mishap at this weekend's event in Mexico.

The NASCAR Cup Series race in Mexico City is set to take place on Sunday, but on Saturday night, the Xfinity Series was in action at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The race was won by home favorite Daniel Suarez, with the Mexican Cup Series star dropping down to compete in the Xfinity Series at his home race and delivering a crowd-pleasing result.

Suarez's win was made official after the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet passed NASCAR's post-race technical inspections.

However, in post-race tech at Mexico City, not all cars were given the all-clear, with NASCAR confirming that the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, driven by Taylor Gray, was found to have one loose lug nut.

Joe Gibbs Racing set for punishment

As a result of this, NASCAR has confirmed that Joe Gibbs Racing are now set to receive a monetary punishment, the amount of which is likely to be revealed in this week's forthcoming post-weekend penalty report.

Several punishments have already been issued this season for similar infringements, including to Joe Gibbs Racing themselves, giving us an idea of the sort of fine that they can expect.

For example, back in March, two of Joe Gibbs Racing's Xfinity Series cars were fined $5000 each for lug nut infractions at Phoenix Raceway under Sections 8.8.10.4a in the NASCAR Rule Book.

Under the same sections of the rule book, later that month, four Xfinity Series teams were hit with penalties following post-race inspection at Homestead-Miami Speedway. On that occasion, once again, each team in question was hit with a $5000 fine.

The most recent punishment for such an infringement came earlier this month, post-Nashville, when JR Motorsports were fined $10,000 and their crew chief suspended for one race after Connor Zilisch's car was found to have two unsecured lug nuts post-race.
