Tributes have been paid to NASCAR legend Travis Carter after his passing this week at the age of 75.

Carter was a long-time crew chief in the Cup Series, winning a championship with Benny Parsons in 1973 before starting his own team, Travis Carter Enterprises, with Carl Haas in 1990.

The legendary figure was a part of the sport for the better part of half a century, with family members joining him in NASCAR later in life – specifically his nephew Larry Carter, who also became a crew chief, and his race driver son Matt Carter.

That title with Parsons was an early sign of Carter's brilliance, having been asked to head up DeWitt Racing at the age of just 23, that partnership yielding a title in its very first season.

Earnhardt Jr.: I'm in awe of men like Travis Carter

The NASCAR world has come together to pay tribute to Carter, who passed on Tuesday after a brief stay in hospice.

NASCAR released a statement, which read: “From his early days atop the pit box to his years as a respected team owner, Travis Carter embodied the competitive spirit, integrity, and passion that define NASCAR. NASCAR extends its heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and many friends.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added his condolences on social media, writing: "Sad news. Travis added a lot to NASCAR. It was really nice to get to talk with him in recent months. I'm in awe of the men like him that shaped the NASCAR I grew up in."

Meanwhile, long-time driver and former Fox reporter Kenny Wallace added: “Travis Carter has passed away. I will always remember Travis changing tires for Junior Johnson’s cars in a VERY calm demeanor. Travis never got on his knees. Travis was a legend. My prayers to the family.”
