NASCAR champion Kyle Larson in nasty wreck ahead of Cup Series race at Michigan

NASCAR star Kyle Larson was involved in a hugely dramatic wreck on Friday night ahead of Cup Series action at Michigan this weekend.

The Cup and Truck Series are both racing at Michigan International Speedway this weekend, with Cup qualifying set to take place on Saturday ahead of the main event on Sunday.

However, ahead of the NASCAR action, Larson was back on the dirt, competing in the World of Outlaws racing series at Plymouth Dirt Track.

Unfortunately, though, things went badly wrong for the 2021 Cup Series champion on lap seven of Friday night's feature. Larson was second at the time and just under one second behind the race leader, but as his No. 57 car approached the first turn at Plymouth, a wheel flew off, resulting in Larson having zero control of his vehicle as it dramatically tumbled over and over and slammed into the catch fence.

Safety crews rushed to Larson's aid, with it confirmed by those on the scene that, thankfully, the NASCAR star was okay.

Kyle Larson explains scary Plymouth wreck

Larson spoke to the race broadcast after the wreck, explaining how it unfolded from his perspective.

"I don't know," Larson replied honestly when quizzed on what had happened.

"I think the right rear axle or something broke, so just kinda launched me and [I was] along for the ride.

"So, bummer, I felt really good pacing Rico [Abreu] there and just finally catching traffic and you know, get racing there, but, wasn't gonna happen.

"Glad I'm okay. Big hits, but all in all I feel fine."
