Hamilton and Russell racing 'as team-mates should'

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has hailed the on-track respect of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with the pair racing "as team-mates should" in Miami.

Although Hamilton started sixth and Russell 12th on Sunday, contrasting tyre strategies put the two together on the track after a late safety car period at the Miami International Autodrome.

Russell hounded Hamilton's gearbox with fresh medium tyres but was twice forced to return fifth position to the seven-time champion after making the move off the track and then conceding the position in a way that gave himself an immediate chance to repass.

Assessing Russell's integration at Mercedes since joining the team over the winter, Wolff said: “He has integrated very well.

"It is almost like he has been here forever and I’m really happy about the two of them, how they interact, how respectful they are about each other.

“Even the situation on Sunday where they raced each other and it was getting a bit ‘I’m not leaving any room’ and then ‘Okay, I’m going to find another way and get the position back'.

“I think this is how the two of them as team-mates should race each other.

“So I am happy how he has settled in.”
