Mercedes celebrate Hamilton anniversary

January 24, 2013. It is nine years since Lewis Hamilton officially joined Mercedes as an F1 driver, ending a six-season relationship with boyhood heroes McLaren.

Hamilton was signed as the replacement for Michael Schumacher who had chosen to retire from F1 for a second time after the hopes of adding to his seven titles failed to materialise across his three years with the team born from Brawn GP.

Over those nine years with Mercedes, Hamilton has gone on to match Schumacher's record haul of seven championships, missing out on an outright eighth last season in the most controversial of circumstances.

Other records, though, have tumbled as Mercedes has dominated the turbo-hybrid era, allowing the Briton to surpass Schumacher's race wins haul of 91 that few felt would be beaten.

Hamilton now has 103 wins to his name, that figure matched by pole positions.

The key question now is will he return to improve on those figures and attempt again to claim the eighth title?

As he continues to remain silent following the events that unfolded in last season's finale in Abu Dhabi, Mercedes has at least paid homage to a driver who started his own dynasty nine years ago.
