F1 backed to improve despite "unbelievable year"

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has backed F1 to continue to "get better" despite proclaiming the sport has "never been more exciting".

The 2021 season was full of thrills and spills with rivalries growing and action aplenty right to the controversial deciding moments that saw Max Verstappen crowned champion over Lewis Hamilton.

Ahead of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Brown was asked to remove his 'CEO hat' and offer his thoughts on the year as a fan.

“I think Monza when McLaren finished one-two was awesome," joked Brown. "In all seriousness, I think it was an unbelievable year up and down the grid.

“I think as you go down the grid from McLaren...Ferrari, Alpine winning a race, our one-two and podiums.

"I think that was been really exciting and I would imagine that Monza was probably one of the more popular podiums for the sport.

"It has been a long time coming so I think that is where you have had different teams win and you have had some surprises."

Netflix series 'Drive to Survive' is an addition that is credited for bringing in a new generation of fans, and Brown held the docuseries aloft as a part of the overall jigsaw to have propelled F1 to becoming "more exciting" than ever.

“Netflix continues to do a wonderful job, so when you put it all together, I think Formula 1 has never been more exciting," added Brown.

"And I am anticipating with the new rules, with Miami coming along, the continuation of Netflix, the closer competition, I think what we are seeing now is Formula 1 at its best and I actually think it will get better.”
