Japanese Grand Prix officially cancelled

The Japanese Grand Prix has been officially cancelled for the second year in a row.

The return to Suzuka was scheduled to take place between October 8 and 10 but a decision by the Japanese Government was made to cancel the race due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis in the country.

F1 had hoped the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo would provide a basis for the event to be run as planned, but this has now thrown the 23-race calendar into doubt.

An F1 statement read: "Following ongoing discussions with the promoter and authorities in Japan, the decision has been taken by the Japanese government to cancel the race this season due to ongoing complexities of the pandemic in the country.

"Formula 1 is now working on the details of the revised calendar and will announce the final details in the coming weeks.

"Formula 1 has proven this year and in 2020 that we can adapt and find solutions to the ongoing uncertainties and is excited by the level of interest in locations to host Formula 1 events this year and beyond."

The cancellation casts doubt on the Turkish Grand Prix with the country's red-list status for UK travel meaning a 10-day quarantine would be needed upon return to the UK.

It was hoped that this could be bypassed with the Japanese round taking place the week after Turkey.
