McLaren announce Foust as 2022 Extreme E driver
McLaren has announced three-time U.S. rallycross champion Tanner Foust as the first of its two Extreme E drivers for 2022.
Foust is one of the most successful drivers in rallycross and alongside his three U.S. titles has won four gold medals in the X Games and two Formula Drift championships.
“To be able to race for McLaren is every driver’s dream and the opportunity to compete for the team in this innovative and imaginative racing series makes it even more special," said Foust.
"The concept is unique and the challenge compelling. It will enable me to draw on all my experience and skills, while being part of a positive cause addressing key issues for our planet and society.”
Extreme E is currently racing its first season, competing in the most remote corners of the planet to highlight the climate change challenges faced by different ecosystems.
F1 champions Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button all run teams with the latter having competed in the opening X Prix of the season.
“We are thrilled that Tanner has joined the McLaren Racing family of drivers," said McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown.
"He is a top-class off-road competitor with a wealth of experience and a winning record.
"Alongside his driving prowess, he’s a fantastic personality, who will help us connect with new fans around the world and bring the purpose and important messages of Extreme E to the fore.
“We’re looking forward to announcing Tanner’s team-mate and our first female McLaren driver, to complete our exciting line-up.”
The team will announce Tanner's team-mate "in the near future". The driver will become the first female McLaren Racing driver.
