Verstappen unfazed by passionate Hamilton fanbase at Silverstone homecoming

Max Verstappen is unfazed by the support Lewis Hamilton will garner at the British Grand Prix this weekend as the home hero aims to stop Red Bull's streak of five F1 victories in a row.

The championship has moved from the Verstappen-supporting Red Bull Ring to the equally formidable Hamilton stronghold of Silverstone for this weekend's event that will see a full-capacity crowd in attendance.

Asked by BBC Radio 4 the effects of the raucous Hamilton fanbase, Verstappen said: "To be honest, that doesn't matter, it is just very understandable that they of course support lewis more in his home country, I am just looking forward to race at Silverstone.

"It is an amazing track and I look forward to seeing so many fans back. They have a lot of passion for motorsport in general so just super exciting."

Hamilton has nothing to prove

Hamilton is searching for a record-breaking eighth world championship but is so far being thwarted by Verstappen, who holds a 32-point lead in the drivers' standings.

The Dutchman has left no room for complacency, however, adding: "I don't think Lewis has anything to prove anymore but of course, as a sportsman and especially in Lewis' case, he is very driven - of course you want to win.

"I think everyone wants to win and I know it is still a very long season so this gap doesn't say anything.

"From my side, I just have to keep on trying to improve. So far we have had a good start to the season but there are always things that can be done better and besides that, we have to keep on developing the car for now.

"That is what we will try to do."
