Racing Point driver Sergio Perez has been cleared to re-enter the Formula 1 paddock after testing negative for Covid-19 on Thursday morning.

Perez had been forced to sit out the British Grand Prix at Silverstone after returning a positive test two weeks ago.

The Mexican had hoped to return to action at the 70h Anniversary Grand prix, also at Silverstone, after completing a seven day period of self-isolation, but a second positive test saw Nico Hülkenberg remain in the drivers seat.

On Thursday morning ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, Racing Point confirmed: "We're pleased to share the news that Sergio Perez has tested negative for Covid-19. The FIA have confirmed that Checo can return to the F1 paddock and he will compete for the team in this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix."

Despite having missed the past two grands prix, Perez remains eighth in the championship standings, just six points back on team-mate Lance Stroll.

Of his return, Perez said: "I’ve definitely missed racing and it was hard to watch from the outside. I can’t wait to get on track, hopefully this weekend.”
