Honda won't guarantee F1 future, despite Verstappen form

They could still leave in 2020.

Honda's F1 managing director Masashi Yamamoto says the Japanese marque remain locked in discussions over whether to remain on the grid, despite their recent successes with Red Bull and Max Verstappen.

Verstappen has handed Honda a first podium, race win and pole position of their most recent entry into F1 this season, helping undo much of the disappointment built up over three hapless years as McLaren's supplier.

Like the other manufacturers in F1, Honda are weighing up whether to remain in the sport once Liberty Media's regulation overhaul comes into play in 2021.

Although Verstappen's brilliance has helped convince some that Honda should remain, a decision is yet to be made.

"There is not much we could do more than this," Yamamoto told Autosport.

"What we've kept saying is we wanted to exceed last year's Red Bull results.

"We didn't say we want to win five races but we want to exceed the points Red Bull scored last year and maybe five wins is possible.

"I think it's going to encourage us for continuation.

"Honda and generally in society [in Japan] are in a very good mood that Honda has won. I think it's going to be very good for us.

"It's very difficult to clarify at this moment about the timing. It's true we're discussing it within the company, but we can't really say when we can announce it, at the moment."
