Stirling Moss - often regarded as the greatest driver to never be crowned world champion - was victorious in this race around the imposing Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. The final race of 1990 was won by Nelson Piquet for Benetton, but that was largely inconsequential. This picture shows the traditional end-of-season driver portrait, with neither Alain Prost or Ayrton Senna present - the Frenchman still incensed at losing out on the title in the previous race in Japan after their pair collided at the first corner at Suzuka - for the second year running, of course.

A treacherous wet race caught out numerous drivers before Mark Webber wrecked his Jaguar on the pit straight and Fernando Alonso ploughed through the wreckage, ending the race with debris strewn over the track. Fernando Alonso won for Renault, but the result was tarnished a year later when it emerged that his team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr had deliberately crashed in order to bring out a safety car and give Alonso a pit-stop to refuel with racing neutralised. The 'Crashgate' scandal was described in The Times as "the worst single piece of cheating in the history of sport".

With Mercedes suddenly holding a tight grip over Formula 1 at the dawning of the V6 Hybrid era, this battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg goes down as a modern classic.
