It looked for all the world that Lewis Hamilton would take pole position at the Russian Grand Prix, until Valtteri Bottas suddenly turned things on in Q3 to secure a record-breaking Saturday success. The Finn maintained his run of outqualifying his teammate every year at Sochi, earning a new track record in the process.
