Ricciardo penalty pain for Monza confirmed
Red Bull confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo will take engine penalties at the Italian Grand Prix after the Australian was forced to retire with damage sustained on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix. Monza has typically been the scene of tactical penalties in the past, with Red Bull aware the circuit does not favour them.
Ricciardo was affected by the domino effect of the huge turn-one crash at Spa-Francorchmaps as he sustained huge rear-wing damage, which prompted an entire change.
The Australian circulated a lap down after a 10-minute pit-stop, but he was called back in to retire with 16 laps remaining after failing to make an indent on those ahead.
After a trip to the 'Cathedral of Speed', Formula 1 will head to the Singapore Grand Prix, where the high-downforce nature of the track has traditionally played into Red Bull's hands.
"Daniel will be taking an engine penalty next weekend for sure," team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports. "Max might be making engine changes, but Singapore might be our next chance to put some pressure on Ferrari and Mercedes."
Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen were caught in the crossfire after Nico Hulkenberg's error under braking sent Fernando Alonso flying through the air to take out Charles Leclerc.
Although he didn't see the chequered flag, Horner hailed the attempts to get Ricciardo back onto the track by the Red Bull mechanics.
"I think it all started off with Hulkenberg misjudging his braking," he added.
"Daniel was lucky in a way, but unlucky in that it ended his race.
"The boys in the garage did an incredible job in getting that rear wing turned around so quick. It usually takes about 45 minutes and it took them 10 minutes."
