Wolff defiantly suggests Mercedes have the quickest car

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has lamented the mistakes which cost the team vital championship points over the Grand Prix triple-header in France, Austria, and Great Britain, but reckons the Silver Arrows can take confidence from the fact they still had the "quickest car" in the races.

The first ever Formula One triple-header, which is a race in three consecutive weekends, was disappointing for Mercedes as they surrendered the lead in both the constructor's championship and driver's championship to Ferrari.

Austria was the biggest let-down as both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were forced into retirement, but Wolff defiantly thinks his team still has the best car on the grid.

“We didn’t score as many points in the triple-header as we had hoped for," Wolff said as he previewed the upcoming German GP.

"A lot of that was down to our own mistakes. However, there is a silver lining to this – while we didn’t maximise on points, we did bring the quickest car to all three races. “

The race in Hockenheim this weekend will mark the midway point of the F1 season, and Wolff didn't give much away when describing his thoughts on the first half of the campaign for Mercedes, calling it simply "decent".

“Hockenheim will mark the halfway point of the 2018 season" he continued.

"We’ve had a decent first half – on the one hand, we’ve left points on the table and had to do damage limitation more often than we would have wanted. On the other hand, we still scored a good amount of points, both drivers have shown strong performances and we have a fast car.

"So there are many reasons why we’re looking forward to the second half of the 2018 season; we’re hungry, ambitious and want to kick on from here.”

The Mercedes team principal thinks that they can hopefully perform for the fans in what is effectively a home GP in Germany, with the Hockenheim track fairly close to headquarters.

“Going to Hockenheim always feels like coming home: it’s only about a 90 minute drive from the Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart" Wolff added.

"While we had the great opportunity to race in front of many of our colleagues from Brackley and Brixworth in Silverstone, we’re now looking forward to welcoming the German members of the Mercedes family to the circuit and to holding high the three-pointed star on home turf.”
