Will Red Bull-Honda scare off Ricciardo?
Daniel Ricciardo says Red Bull's decision to use Honda power units in 2019 will not play a key role in his decision whether to remain with the team or not. The Australian is pushing for a decision to be made before the mid-season break.
Ricciardo has been expected to sign fresh terms with Red Bull in recent weeks, despite having been linked to Ferrari and Mercedes in pre-season, as well as a big-money move to McLaren more recently.
McLaren suffered a woeful tree years with Honda engines, although Toro Rosso's performances with the Japanese marque in 2018 suggest that more potential is to be unlocked.
"I think it probably won't have an effect on what I choose to do," Ricciardo told Thursday's press conference before Red Bull's home Austrian Grand Prix.
"It gives me a bit more clarity of the direction the team's going and they've pretty much got everything laid out in front of me.
"It's up to me to understand what I think of it. I see the pros with the decision, obviously the chance to start something new with Honda.
"It's now for me to really think about. But in a way, it's a good thing they have made a decision."
McLaren's reported late interest has come as they prepare for Fernando Alonso's potential exit from F1, but Ricciardo's wish for a speedy decision suggests they might have come too late.
"There's of course been a bit of interest," he said.
"I personally want to get something done ideally before the break.
"More from a personal point of view I want to go on break with a clear mind so it feels like a break.
"A few years ago when I was making the transition from Toro Rosso to Red Bull that all happened during the break and it wasn't a fun August break for me.
"With Red Bull now, they've committed to Honda, so they've got all their cards on the table. I know what I'm getting there and things will start to get to a point now when I know what's what and hopefully have something soon for everyone."
