Mercedes wouldn't consider leaving F1, says Wolff
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has stated that the company do not envisage a future where they will not be involved in Formula 1, adding that the brand is intrinsically tied to the sport and that it is 'part of their core business'.
Ferrari have been most vocal in recent months regarding their future in the sport, with boss Sergio Marchionne insisting that if Liberty Media's vision does not concur with theirs, they would consider a complete exit from the discipline.
Wolff, however, has opted to stablise the relationship between Mercedes and F1 by insisting that they have no intention of stepping away from proceedings and that their company model is based around their continued involvement.
At the Bild100 sport conference in Berlin, he was quoted as saying: "Formula 1 is part of our core business,
"The first Mercedes was a race car. Formula 1 is not just a marketing platform for us.
"There is a direct technology transfer from the series. In addition, we cherish the sportiness of our brand. That’s why we want to stay in the series because it’s the only true global platform that counts for us."
Wolff also addressed the rising interest in Formula E and added that not only did he not expect the concept to grow to the extent that it has, that they are watching with a view to perhaps creating a complementary team.
"Formula 1 is clearly the top class in racing. But electrification happens, and it is a good message for every brand," Wolff continued.
"Three years ago, I would not have given Formula E a chance. But that has changed. It addresses a young, urban target group.
"The series' creators have done a good job. For us, it’s like a start-up we’re interested in. But it is complementary to Formula 1 for us, not a competition."
