Hamilton worried about Miami Grand Prix 'distractions'

Lewis Hamilton joked that he would struggle to win a Miami Grand Prix owing to the numerous distractions on hand in the party city. Liberty Media confirmed plans to introduce a Miami street race in the 2019 season, with local councillors set for a vote over the proposals.

Liberty are keen to add second grands prix in the United States and China as they expand the Formula 1 calendar - CEO Chase Carey has claimed a 25-race schedule is the ultimate aim for Liberty.

The intention to add a street race in downtown Miami was confirmed this week, although some local residents have voiced opposition to the event.

Hamilton has enjoyed great Stateside success previously, with six United States Grand Prix wins to his name - more than any driver in history.

However, the reigning champion is worried that racing would be the last thing on his mind if he were in Miami.

Hamilton told a sponsor Q+A: "My friends messaged 'Miami'. I was like 'I'm not winning that race' cos it's the most exciting place!

"Miami's awesome, it's a great party spot... oh jeez, it would be a hot weekend!

"I might have to stay out of town, it would be a lot of fun.

"There's a lot of beautiful women there, there's going to be so many distractions!"

Hamilton took victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last time out, earning a four-point lead over Sebastian Vettel at the top of the drivers' championship.

Mercedes were mostly off the pace in Baku, however, with poor fortune for Vettel and Valtteri Bottas opening the door for Hamilton, who says similar performances will not be enough to seal a fifth world title.

"Leading the championship is great, but if we continue as we are, it will take a lot of lucky races to keep me here," he said

"And you can't expect that for the next 17 races."
