Ricciardo vows more late moves once "on top of" McLaren brakes
Daniel Ricciardo has vowed to live up to his billing as Formula 1's 'king of the late brakers' once he has finally adapted to a key area of the new McLaren.
Ricciardo has become renowned over the years for pulling off last-ditch moves into heavy braking zones, particularly during his time with Red Bull once fully acquainted with his car.
In moving from Red Bull to Renault two years ago the Australian took time to adapt to the car. He recognises he faces the same issue with the MCL35M, notably with the brakes as he considers them to be the hardest part to become comfortable with.
“It is certainly different so I'm still probably adapting or adjusting to that [the brakes]," said Ricciardo.
"So I think now after going from Red Bull to Renault and Renault to McLaren, probably the braking is maybe the biggest thing which seems like you need to adapt.
“So yeah, I think that is one where I am still trying to get on top of it and understand where the limit is of the car but I think generally, in the past couple of years, it looks like they have had a pretty good car on braking.
“I think once I am up to speed, that will be a pretty good one and hopefully [you will] see some good passes from me again – some late ones.”
Ricciardo concedes in trying to get on top of the brakes, it is more about the feel on a mechanical level as he also becomes accustomed to the cockpit on a physical level.
“With the braking, it is more probably just a mechanical feeling," added Ricciardo.
"With a new car, new pedals and positioning, it’s more probably just a feel on that physically than anything else for now.”
