Verstappen determined to "forget" 'beep' Italian GP
Max Verstappen is determined to "forget" a wretched Italian Grand Prix in which "everything that could go wrong did go wrong".
Verstappen suffered what he concedes was "a very bad start" due to excessive wheelspin off the line, dropping him from fifth to ninth by the end of the first lap.
That mired him in a train of cars around a Monza circuit where he claims it is "almost impossible to overtake" before later retiring with a power unit issue on lap 30, ending a run of six successive podiums.
The result has dropped Verstappen to third in the drivers' standings, 54 points adrift of Lewis Hamilton and seven behind Valtteri Bottas.
"It was a pretty beep-it-away day," assessed Verstappen, opting to insert his own beep rather than swear.
“I think pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Now we just have to forget this race and move on to next week at a new circuit [Mugello] we are all excited to visit."
Verstappen was at least delighted for Pierre Gasly following a shock win for the Frenchman and AlphaTauri, 12 years on from the team's only other success, also at Monza where Sebastian Vettel scored his maiden triumph when the team was known as Toro Rosso.
"Of course, I'm very happy for Pierre," said Verstappen. "The whole weekend they were very quick, and then to win the race here is very emotional, and a great result for them.
"It's a great group of people, and I hope they are going to enjoy this one because they deserve it, so great."
