Pigot returns home after heavy Indy 500 crash
IndyCar driver Spencer Pigot has thanked the track safety teams at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and has returned home following a huge shunt towards the end of the 2020 Indianapolis 500.
Pigot had been running 15th as the 104th running of the Indy 500 entered its final five laps, but an error at turn four put the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver into the wall at turn four.
Unable to control the car that now had only two functioning wheels, Pigot was a passenger as his car slid at speed into end of the pit wall, a contact that instantly dissipated the speed of the Honda powered car.
Fortunately, the concrete wall had significant protection around it, but the contact was heavy enough for Pigot, who was making his fifth appearance at the Indy 500, to be sent from the on site medical centre to the local hospital for further checks.
Commenting later on social media on Monday morning, Pigot confirmed he had been given the all clear.
Writing on social media, he said: "Headed home after a long day. Thanks to the IndyCar safety team and IU Health for taking great car of me."
For team owner Bobby Rahal, there were conflicting emotions at the flag. While his thoughts were with Pigot, Takuma Sato in the other car had won the race outright.
