Gasly targeting second bite of the Red Bull cherry
Gasly targeting second bite of the Red Bull cherry
Pierre Gasly has set his sights on being given a second chance by Red Bull.
Almost a year ago, and seemingly struggling in the shadow of Max Verstappen, Gasly was demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso following a poor first half to the 2019 season in comparison to the Dutchman, with Alex Albon stepping up.
Allowed to regain his confidence, Gasly finished a notable second in the Brazilian Grand Prix, before starting this campaign with AlphaTauri with a fine seventh in the Austrian Grand Prix.
After qualifying eighth just behind Albon for the second race at the Red Bull Ring, the French driver followed that up with another superb Q3 performance in Hungary, while Albon failed to make it out of Q2.
Although failing to score points in the last two races after finishing 15th in Styria and retiring at the Hungaroring, Gasly sees no reason why he cannot force his way back in at Red Bull.
"As a Red Bull contracted driver, my goal is to be in the fastest car, to fight for the best positions, and at the moment Red Bull has the fastest car," said Albon.
"The only thing I can do is just drive well and be fast, which is what I try to do every weekend."
Gasly is aware, though, of the difficulty he faces given the circumstances surrounding both Verstappen and Albon.
"Objectively speaking, Max has signed for many years and Alex has a strong backer from Thailand," added Gasly. "I don't know if this will change in the future.
"On my side, I just need to focus on my job with AlphaTauri. As long as I keep pushing I will always believe an opportunity will arise at some point."
While naturally focused on performing with AlphaTauri, Gasly is hoping the team could follow in the footsteps of Racing Point.
"We've seen what Racing Point is doing, from a midfield team, they are becoming a challenger for podiums," said Gasly.
"Hopefully with the new regulations coming, we will see this more and more often."
