Vettel bitter at German GP Q1 elimination

Sebastian Vettel says he is “bitter” at having being eliminated from the first round of qualifying for his home German Grand Prix due to a problem with his car.

Only a few moments into Q1 at the Hockenheimring, Vettel reported a lack of power over team radio and was subsequently called back into the garage. Even after the Ferrari engineers worked quickly to try and rectify the issue, the German eventually stood out of the car to make his exit from qualifying.

It was later confirmed that it was the airflow to the car turbo which caused the problem.

“I don't know what happened. Something broke with the turbo and it was game over from there,” Vettel said after his elimination.

“Obviously, yeah, very bitter. I think the car is great and we lost out on a big chance but hopefully we'll have another chance tomorrow.”

Vettel still hopes to enjoy the festivities of his home race, but is disappointed that he won’t be starting in a challenging position for the win rather than dead last.

“I'm looking forward to the race, but obviously it would have been nicer to start at the very front than the very back,” he added.

In Q3, Vettel’s team-mate Charles Leclerc was also eliminated after suffering engine problems, ending an awful day for the Scuderia.
