NASCAR star Denny Hamlin reveals he could MISS Mexico City race and refuse to travel

NASCAR Cup Series star Denny Hamlin has admitted that he could refuse to travel to this weekend's race in Mexico City.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver is expecting his third child with fiancee Jordan Fish any day now, with Ryan Truex on standby to step into the No. 11 car for the third weekend in a row.

Hamlin has been prepared for the birth for weeks now, and has now reiterated that he'll skip the inaugural points-paying Cup Series race in Mexico if Fish still hasn't given birth by the time he needs to head south of the border.

The 44-year-old is on a brilliant run this year, already winning three races to rubber stamp his playoff spot while picking up a further four top-five finishes to sit third in the regular season points championship.

Hamlin: If the baby's not born, I'm not going to Mexico

If Hamlin were to skip this weekend's race, he would have to apply for a waiver in order to keep hold of his playoff eligibility and the 18 playoff points he has earned via three race wins and three stage wins this season.

However, with the birth of a child listed as one of the circumstances in which a waiver should be granted, that shouldn't prove too much of an issue.

Hamlin told Sirius XM this week: “I said from the very beginning, if she hasn’t had it by the time I need to leave for Mexico, then I’m not going to go to Mexico. I think that that’s the proper thing to do. But really, just letting her (Fish) call the shots. I think that’s the best thing.

"When her body and her mind says that it’s time, then that’s what we’ll do. And ultimately, I need to be there for her, during, post-(birth) and all those things. Just going to make sure I spend the proper time with her, and obviously the racing will come second this week.”
