McLaren, Norris await Mercedes power unit salvage

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl is hoping the power unit that failed in Lando Norris's car at the Austrian Grand Prix can still be salvaged.

The Woking-based team endured a testing beginning to the sprint weekend at the Red Bull Ring, with Norris restricted to his garage for the vast majority of the first practice session with an issue.

The Briton was unable to perform any qualifying simulations ahead of the Friday afternoon session, where his day became worse with a brake issue.

But addressing the power unit problem that hurt Norris in FP1, Seidl explained: "The power unit that failed on Lando’s side on Friday was a brand new one. It was his third one.

"The analysis is still ongoing on Mercedes HPP side at the moment and hopefully they are in a position to recover that power unit and we will be in a better place again."

Norris reverted to an old power unit for the weekend in Austria but was still able to finish seventh as the lead McLaren.

“Of course, it is not ideal that we have to go back to the old power units from the pool just because power units lose a bit of power with the mileage," added Seidl.

“But at the same time, it still allowed us to perform as we did [in Austria].”
