Newey 'allowed a smile' after beating Ferrari on home soil

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey revealed to 'allowing a smile' after the team's domination of Ferrari at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez registered a record-breaking 58 point haul from Imola as the team finished one-two.

Red Bull dropped just one point across the weekend as a whole with Perez finishing Saturday's sprint race third as he and Verstappen were split by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.

The points score was exactly what Red Bull required to close the championship gap to the Scuderia with the constructors' margin reduced from 49 to just 11.

Asked if he had allowed himself to smile after making such considerable ground on 'Ferrari's home patch', Newey told the F1 Nation podcast: “Absolutely.

"The plane [was] a relax and enjoy the moment for sure. We always try to do that and if we have a bad race, the rule of thumb is always to lick wounds on a Sunday evening but Monday has to be we get back in and get back on with it."

Red Bull cannot rest on success

Max Verstappen's victory at Imola came off the back of a disappointing weekend in Australia where he had retired through reliability for the second time this year.

Explaining how the team reacts to success and failure in a very similar way, Newey added: “You can’t afford to feel sorry for yourself and if you have a great result, it’s exactly the same.

"Enjoy it, Monday will be a great feeling but you’ve got to get back in the factory and keep developing.”
