F1 Explained: What is the halo? Why has it been introduced?
The halo cockpit protection device has dominated discussion ahead of the 2018 Formula 1 season. A new addition to the cars is always sure to get tongues wagging. But what is the halo, and why does F1 need it? We answered the key questions.
WHAT IS THE HALO?
The halo is a titanium structure, covered with carbon fibre, that sits above the cockpit of an F1 car. It is capable of withstanding huge impacts, which could potentially save drivers' lives.
WHY DOES F1 NEED THE HALO?
The death of IndyCar driver Justin Wilson in 2015 raised calls for greater cockpit protection in open-wheel racing. Wilson was struck by on-track debris at the Pocono Speedway, suffering a traumatic brain injury.
Jules Bianchi's passing after crashing into a crane at the Japanese Grand Prix is also often referenced, but it has been stressed that halo would not have saved Bianchi.
WHICH CARS WILL USE THE HALO?
Every car in F1 will run this year with the halo. The device will also be implemented on Formula E cars from next year.
IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE HALO?
There is. F1 tested a Red Bull-designed aeroscreen, modelled on the cockpit of jet fighters. This solution is being tested further by IndyCar, but was not pursued further by F1. It is seen as aesthetically better than halo, but Sebastian Vettel reported it caused issue with his vision when he trialled it.
WHAT DO F1 TEAMS THINK OF THE HALO?
Opinion is mixed. Drivers like Max Verstappen and Kevin Magnussen have criticised its introduction and say that they accept the dangers involved in F1. Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel are two high-profile drivers to espouse the importance of safety.
Force India said that implementing the halo had cost them "huge" amounts, while Mercedes chief Toto Wolff said he wanted to take a chainsaw to it!
WHAT DO F1 FANS THINK OF THE HALO?
The fan reaction has been mostly negative. How the cars look plays a major role in fan enjoyment, and the halo's clunky view has turned some fans off. Some have even suggested they will not watch F1 due to the presence of halo in 2018.
