FIA hit back at Hamilton's stewards' bias accusation

The FIA has reacted strongly to Lewis Hamilton's claim of apparent bias from stewards, insisting they are "independent" and 'impartial'.

The seven-time champion caused a stir with his remarks during a press conference on the opening day of pre-season testing at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.

Hamilton called on F1 and the FIA to establish "non-biased stewards", believing a number of those currently in place are too friendly with some drivers.

"Race drivers, some are very, very good friends with certain individuals, some travel with certain individuals and tend to take more of a keen liking to some of us," remarked Hamilton.

"So I think [we need] people who have no bias, and are super-central when it comes to making decisions."

Hamilton's remarks were seemingly a reference to perceived inconsistencies from the stewards' room last season with regard to a variety of decisions.

Given the strength of Hamilton's remarks, the FIA has felt compelled to respond.

An FIA spokesperson said: "The FIA is proud of its global stewarding pathway that connects and develops the most talented stewards from across motorsport.

"This has resulted in a strong, independent and experienced group of officials who carry out their work with impartiality and the utmost professionalism."
