Horner criticises pressure on FIA over Masi axing

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has criticised the pressure applied to the FIA over Michael Masi's removal as F1 race director.

The Australian was repositioned within the governing body as part of changes made in reaction to the controversial season finale in Abu Dhabi last year.

Mercedes, in particular, were left irate in the aftermath of the race at Yas Marina having felt the procedures taken by Masi had been incorrect, eaving the team and Lewis Hamilton with a lack of faith in the sport.

Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas have been drafted in to alternate the role through the season whilst Charlie Whiting's former right-hand man Herbie Blash has returned as the permanent senior advisor.

Speaking on Talksport's breakfast show, Horner was asked for his perspective on Masi's departure.

“It’s a difficult one," he replied.

"It’s the FIA’s business. I think it is harsh, I think he was in a very difficult position last year.

“We felt a lot of the decisions went against us last year.

“When you look at what he has at his disposal in terms of resource, compared to what the teams have, it’s such a massive difference.

“It’s good to hear they are bringing in things like the VAR equivalent and one of the most experienced guys in Herbie Blash (former F1 deputy race director).

“I just think there was so much pressure put on the removal of Michael and that’s not right. That’s my personal feeling.”
