McLaren to appoint first director of sustainability
McLaren Racing is to appoint its first director of sustainability ahead of the 2022 season.
Kim Wilson will join the team on January 31 to spearhead the team's drive towards sustainability, with an announcement earlier this year outlining its goals to become a net-zero operation by 2030 - aligning with F1's own targets.
The announcement coincides with the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, where McLaren had already engaged in a function to reveal its inaugural Extreme E car and first female driver.
McLaren Racing sustainability officer Tim Bampton said: “Kim is a senior sustainability professional who will bring a wealth of experience of embedding sustainability into the culture and decision-making at McLaren Racing.
"Her experience in this field is second to none. She joins McLaren at a time when our future commitment to sustainability is of paramount importance and I have no doubt she will deliver shared value for the team at McLaren as well as to the environment.”
Wilson added: "McLaren Racing’s ambition to drive and champion innovation that helps others transition to a net-zero, circular world and positively contributes to a truly sustainable future is really inspiring.
"I am excited to be joining the team at such a pivotal time and am looking forward to working with my new colleagues to turn these bold ambitions into reality.”
With its signature to the UN Sports for Climate Action Commitment, McLaren has committed itself to joining the wider sports community as a "responsible global citizen combating climate change".
This entails measuring, reducing and reporting the team's emissions with the goal to hit net-zero by 2040, although the team has already targeted hitting that feat by the end of this decade.
