Gasly - 2022 changes an opportunity for AlphaTauri to "nail it"
Pierre Gasly is confident the 2022 F1 regulation changes will offer AlphaTauri the chance to leap up the order just as sister team Red Bull achieved in 2009.
In three of its first four seasons competing in F1, Red Bull finished seventh in the constructors' standings. Its best result was fifth in 2007.
The 2009 rule changes, however, saw Red Bull catapult up the order as it finished second to Brawn GP that year before embarking on its run of four consecutive drivers' and constructors' championship doubles.
With next season seemingly wide open in terms of the pecking order, Gasly said: "It is difficult going into next year to know exactly where we are going to stand.
"It is a new regulation and I want to believe that it is going to bring opportunities to teams like us to nail it with this new car and new regs for next year.
"Hopefully, it is even better next year."
Gasly fighting to make history with AlphaTauri
After failing to record a podium result for Red Bull in a short 12-race spell with the team in 2019, Gasly has since bagged three pieces of silverware for Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri, including his maiden F1 win in Italy last year.
The team, however, has endured two tough recent races in Monza and Sochi, failing to score a point and slipping 19 adrift of Alpine in the fight for fifth in the constructors' standings, which would represent its best result in F1 if achieved.
Gasly is refusing to give up the fight, adding: "We are in a position to fight for fifth in the championship which would mean the best result for this team in their career in Formula 1.
"That is something personally I really want to bring to the team that will mean a lot for me.
"There will be even more to achieve. My targets are obviously to always deliver more and better and that is what I will try to achieve with AlphaTauri next year."
