"Mindblowing" Hamilton "the best there has ever been" - Wolff

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has branded Lewis Hamilton "mindblowing" and "the best there has ever been" after the British driver registered his 100th F1 victory.

Hamilton has had to wait since his British Grand Prix in mid-July to finally become the first centurion in F1 history after taking the chequered flag in a chaotic Russian GP.

The seven-time F1 champion's success, though, was far from straightforward, appearing at one stage as if he would have to settle for second place behind McLaren driver Lando Norris until late rain played a defining role.

"He wins the 100th race and it is in the news today and tomorrow and then the world is moving on," said Wolff.

"But the truth is that when we look back in many years, it is very special to have been part of that journey, and a witness to this journey because he is the all-time record holder.

"It's a journey no other driver in F1 history has done so far. That's beyond race wins and championship victories, that is the very human part of all this.

“I think his record speaks for itself. He is just the best there has ever been.”

Hamilton's victory returned him to the top of the drivers' standings by just two points from Red Bull driver Max Verstappen who managed to finish second after starting last on the grid.

With Hamilton attempting to become the outright record holder with an eighth title, Wolff added: "We are witnesses of a career that is just amazing. The 100th race victory is just mind-blowing.

“If you were to be in awe then that would be the wrong working relationship but we realise that we have been part of a journey that no other sportsman in Formula 1 has done so far."
