F1 2022 "an incredible opportunity to reset"

Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali is confident the new 2022 regulations present "an incredible opportunity to reset" the sport.

The introduction of entirely new aerodynamic regulations mean teams are developing next year's machinery with close to a completely blank sheet with only the power unit specification carried over.

"There will be an incredible opportunity to reset," Domenicali told GQ magazine.

"There’s a chance to be closer, that will come. Will it be there from the very first race? I don’t think so, but that’s part of the game – things will evolve and this will happen in a shorter time than usual.

"The big teams will have to change their culture and mindset when you are used to a culture in which you can spend as much as you want – this has changed.

"Now they will have to decide which areas they want to develop."

F1 not heading in single-make direction

F1 launched a show car demonstrating the new regulations ahead of the British Grand Prix with teams later releasing mock-ups featuring current liveries.

Despite the prescriptive regulations, however, Alpine executive director Marcin Budkowski is confident they will not lead to identically designed cars.

"By definition, these regulations, even if they are more restrictive, are still open to development, so we’re far from a one-make formula so far," he explained.

"Equally, one of the objectives of the FIA and Formula 1, when they conceived these regulations, is to make them more restrictive because they want closer racing, as in less differences, less potential, if you want, for differentiation between the teams."
