Russell forced to change driving approach in search for points
George Russell has revealed he has had to adapt his driving approach to maximise the chances of ending Williams' long points drought in F1.
The British driver is in his third season with the team after winning in both GP3 and F2 with a pragmatic, points-building style.
But with Williams scrapping for any opportunity to take a point and end a barren run that stretches back to the 2019 German Grand Prix, Russell has indicated he has had to alter his method to try and achieve a top-10 finish when a chance arises.
At the Spanish Grand Prix last time out, Williams pitted early on and double-stacked under safety car conditions in order to try and jump into the points, with Russell expecting there to be more gambles through the season.
"It is difficult for the strategists because we are all trying to roll the dice to get fortunate and get that one good result," said Russell.
"We only need one good result in the whole season to transform the constructors' championships and as a driver, I recognise that."
On his own driving style, he then added: "Sometimes you have to put more on the table than you would if you are going for a championship.
"It is naturally who I am as a driver, and not how I have gone about my business in the junior series when I was trying to win a championship as opposed to going all-in for that one opportunity."
