VIDEO: Why the Australian Grand Prix faces postponement

Formula 1 hopes to avoid cancelling the Australian Grand Prix for a second year in succession but quarantine restrictions look set to at least postpone the planned season opener.

The race was cancelled at the 11th hour last year after a member of the McLaren team tested positive for Covid-19 as the virus began to take hold globally.

The recent rise in cases due to a new variant of the virus has resulted in numerous countries increasing restrictions or, in the case of England, entering a full lockdown.

Australia has managed to keep cases to a relatively low number through the implementation of a strict quarantine period for international travellers, with all arrivals required to remain in a hotel room for 14 days.

That quarantine period, however, has proven a thorny problem for F1 and it is now working with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and state government on an alternative date for the race rather than again cancelling outright.

With 11 races in 15 weekends after the summer break, however, finding an alternate date is no easy task as GPFans explores.
