Verstappen: F1 records mean nothing without titles
Max Verstappen's growing list of records will mean nothing if he does not add world titles to them, according to the Red Bull driver's father Jos.
Verstappen is the youngest grand prix driver, points-scorer, podium finisher and winner in Formula 1 history.
Having passed a century of races in the USA last weekend, the 22-year-old will move level with his father's Dutch-record 107 grands prix when F1 returns to the Netherlands and Zandvoort next year.
Despite his many achievements, Verstappen Jr is yet to truly feature in a title fight, although it is hoped that the Red Bull-Honda axis will be able to keep pace with Mercedes and Ferrari in 2020.
And the elder Verstappen, who raced for Benetton, Arrows and Minardi among other teams in his F1 career, says only championships matter.
Jos told De Telegraaf: "We don't need the record for the most number of races. We have to become the world champion."
Verstappen broke the record for F1's youngest race-winner on his Red Bull debut at the Spanish GP, sailing through after Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg crashed on the opening lap in Barcelona.
"It was all very emotional," Jos said. "The way he drove, for the first time with his new team and then immediately winning the race. Wonderful.
"He was so incredibly good on the tyres. When I see the images again, I still get shivers down my spine."
