The first pre-season test of the 2019 Formula 1 calendar concludes in Barcelona, after Wednesday threw up a few surprises to whet fans' appetites. Kimi Raikkonen and Daniil Kvyat stole the headlines with a couple of mega laps that hint at strong progress at Alfa Romeo and Toro Rosso respectively.

Both laps dipped under the 1min 18secs barrier and were quicker than anything either team had managed in Barcelona a year ago, despite new aero regulations reportedly making cars slower.

Although we have little clue as to how car setup affects performance at this time of year, the progress being made in the midfield is certainly encouraging.

Williams may well be expected to prop up the grid again this year, having only gotten started on Wednesday.

After a delay in getting the FW42 ready that Claire Williams labelled "embarrassing", the Grove squad are set for a full day on Thursday, with both Robert Kubica and George Russell slated for action.

We wait with baited breath to see if the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull will show their full hand in terms of headline pace – hopefully we won't turn blue between now and the Australian Grand Prix…
