Verstappen's win in Austria reduces Honda to tears

Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix, securing Honda's first Formula 1 victory in 13 years and reducing the Japanese mechanics in the Red Bull garage to tears.

Honda returned to F1 in 2015 with McLaren, hoping to relive the glory days of their dominance in the 1980s and 1990s with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in the famous British squad.

A world champion pairing of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button was no help as the Japanese marque were unable to keep pace with Mercedes, Ferrari and even Renault in three years with McLaren.

That relationship eventually came to an end in 2018, with Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso taking on the Honda power unit.

There were enough signs to convince Red Bull to join them, and Verstappen secured their first podium in a decade in the Australian GP.

Verstappen's Austria win remains under investigation, as his winning move on Charles Leclerc saw the Ferrari man forced off-track.

If it stands, it will be Honda's first win since Hungary 2006, when Button won for the works team which ran for three seasons before folding and becoming the Brawn GP outfit.

Having had many brickbats thrown their way over the years, the emotions were clear to see for Honda's employees as Verstappen took the chequered flag for a second straight year in Red Bull's home race.
