Hamilton shares tribute to Schumacher
Lewis Hamilton has taken to his personal Instagram account to pay a touching tribute to Michael Schumacher following a season in which the Mercedes driver won his fourth Formula One world championship and also surpassed the German's pole position record in the process.
Schumacher is considered to be one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport and currently holds the record for the amount of championship titles won at seven. He retired in 2012 but a year on from that he suffered a life-threatening brain injury after a skiing accident. A medically-induced coma saved his life at the time, but as of yet he has been unable to make a full recovery, despite waking up.
Hamilton has now won four titles, and with the surpassing of the pole position record during the campaign, the world champion wrote on Instagram:
“Michael, equalling your pole position record in Belgium this year meant so much to me and was a true honour.
“Praying for you and your family all the time #KeepFightingMichael #Legend @michaelschumacher”
Hamilton certainly has time on his side if he wants to go on to become the most decorated driver ever and go beyond Schumacher's total of seven, but the Englishman does not believe it'll happen due to the fact he does not see himself performing in F1 for an extended period of many more years.
When questioned shortly after this season about whether he could beat the record, Hamilton said:
“I can’t see it at the moment. Four more? It’s taken me 10 years to achieve these four… I don’t know - I still don’t currently have that desire to match it.”
