Haas doing "more than surviving" in F1 - Steiner
Guenther Steiner is adamant Haas is doing more than just surviving this season despite the decision to halt the development of the VF-21.
Haas announced it would not upgrade the car at all this season off the back of the Covid-hit 2020 campaign during which the team was hit financially by the impact of the pandemic.
But despite this, Steiner has insisted he is not settling for survival but that the team was just being realistic about its chances in the last season of the current regulations.
“I would say we are more than surviving," said Steiner. "I see it as a transitional year.
"I think we are surviving – that is not a problem that we are surviving – but obviously we are focusing on next year.
"There was no big point for us, from where we were last year, to put a lot of effort into 2021 knowing these regulations are coming to an end and we will have to develop for 2022 a completely new car.
“For us, it was no real point. We accept we have to take a step backwards to take two forwards. That is our year – a transitional year but we are not holding back on 2022."
Next year sees a raft of changes introduced into F1, with radical aerodynamic regulations headlining the new breed of car.
Steiner indicated the American team was hard at work ensuring it can get off to a flying start in the new era of the sport.
“I wouldn’t call [this season] a holding pattern," he added. "That means you stop everything but we are the opposite. We are actually developing quite heavily on 2022.
“We are up and running totally and pushing hard for 2022. We just decided to go that way.”
