McLaren must "not get carried away" after strong 2020 - Seidl

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl has warned his team must "not get carried away" with after finishing third to Red Bull and Mercedes last year.

Winning the midfield battle fought with Racing Point and Renault in 2020, McLaren enjoyed its most successful year since 2012.

Reflecting on a gruelling year with 17 races completed across just 24 weekends, Seidl said the continually strong results assisted in keeping morale high.

“17 races in six months is something we have never done before and is hopefully something we can also avoid in the future," he explained.

“With the results we were collecting, it helped to keep the spirit up within the team, to get through these challenges together as one team together with all the support we got also from home.

“It’s simply important to, again, not get carried away with it and it is important to make sure that we get the next steps in place for the integration of the Mercedes power unit. It is a big job that first needs to be finished and then, hopefully, we hit the track straightway in good shape."

With Carlos Sainz having moved to Ferrari, McLaren welcomed Daniel Ricciardo to the team for 2021 and Seidl stated McLaren has its work cut out to provide the Australian with the right machinery.

“We get a new driver line-up next year also with Daniel [Ricciardo] coming in," he continued.

"It is great for us to get a reference like Daniel, a proven race winner who has shown in the past that he can win races with having the right material.

“Then we simply have to keep working on ourselves as a team to keep improving.”
