Alonso eyeing a Formula One return

Fernando Alonso is plotting a Formula One comeback in 2021, using the change in regulations as an ideal time to jump back in to a level playing field.

Champion with Renault in both 2005 and 2006, Alonso came close to adding to his haul with McLaren in 2007 and Ferrari in 2010, but now, after walking away from the sport in at the end of 2018, the Spaniard is keen on a return.

"2021 is a good opportunity and I now feel fresh and ready for it. I will try it," Alonso told F1 Racing magazine. "I have a lot of confidence in myself and I know that I can drive every car and, if all goes well, I could win."

If successful in his bid to return, Alonso would be 39-years old at the start of the season. Only the then 41-year old Kimi Raikkonen would be older.

"I don't think my age plays a negative role," continued Alonso. "Now that we are driving without having to refuel, it is a lot less demanding. You drive seven or eight seconds slower on Sundays than on Saturdays and moreover everyone has to learn their driving style again as the 18-inch tires are being introduced.

"I have had a lot of contact with Red Bull in the past. The first time I thought was in 2007, when I left McLaren and then several times in 2008, before (Sebastian) Vettel switched from Toro Rosso to Red Bull."

Should they decide to continue in the sport, a potential reunion with former McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes would excite Alonso.

"They have dominated for many years in a row and have a strong team right now," said Alonso. "We will see. The only problem with the new rules is that some teams can implement them better than others."
