Imola ready for Formula 1 return

Numerous European circuits have opened doors to the possibility of hosting Formula 1 in 2020, but the renewal of Imola's FIA grade 1 status has kept hopes of a first San Marino Grand Prix since 2006 alive.

Formula 1 has raced at Imola on 27-ocassions - once as the Italian Grand Prix in 1980, and 26-times as the San Marino Grand Prix between 1981-2006.

"With the renewal of the license we are in the condition to host also a F1 Grand Prix, having all the standards requested by FIA," said Imola chairman Uberto Selvatico.

"We hope that such dream becomes true with the teamwork of the institutions and territory."

It is believed that Imola sits in direct competition with the Ferrari-owned Mugello circuit for the right to host round nine of the 2020 championship, the previous race being the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The race would be the 1000th grand prix start for Ferrari, hence the manufacturer's desire for the race to take place at Mugello.

Also in possession of a grade one certificate from the FIA is Ferrari's Fiorano test track, but as no racing takes place at the venue, the circuit does not present a third option to Formula 1.
